You must present your boater safety certificate to operate the pontoon boat.  Visit the link to the Michigan DNR to create your account with the DNR if you don’t have one, or to log in. You can reprint your certificate if you have taken the course.

To take the class, visit the Michigan DNR Boater Safety page to select a course where you can register for a class. The class options include in-person, Online and interactive Online.

If you were born before 1996, the class isn’t required, but recommended. For those born in 1996 or later, it is mandatory, and your pontoon rental will be forfeited if you do not have the certificate when arriving at the lake – NO REFUNDS. Do not rent if you don’t plan on getting the certificate.
